While there has long been a controversy whether businesses should provide annual leave up to 4 weeks to their staff, I tend to say that we should pay more attention to the side effects of this practice.
Superficially, a prolonged vacation will be undoubtedly applauded by employees, though the intendedbenefits to work remain dubious to me. Living in the modern society with highstress, many working adults are toiling around the clock dealing with endless tasks, which might eventually exhaust their enthusiasm towards work. In response to this, a longer holiday seems to be a practical policy, which not just allows them an opportunity of recharging physically, but increases their job satisfaction.
However, beyond the seemingly advantages, comes my apprehension about the negative ramifications of this approach. The first problem we cannot afford to ignore is the impact on the productivity and efficiency of the corporation. The modern enterprises are moving in a direction where there are seldom any positions duplicated, meaning that the absence of any staff for a month or even longer will lead to the disruption of the work process of a company. Such a result is hard to swallow for any employers.
Another factor neglected by the advocators of extended holiday is that it might jeopardize the relationship among colleagues. To watch others putting their feet up for long might spark the jealousy mood within those who are still locked in front of computers. In the other way around, if one’s tasks were to be covered by other team members in the office, it would exacerbate the already heavy workloads of other colleagues.
Given this, I would reiterate that an extended holiday of staff should not be to the detriment of the development of company and the team spirit.
